BHS Health and Fitness Curriculum

Physical Education
Our PE program empowers students to make choices, meet challenges, and develop positive behaviors in fitness, health, wellness and movement activity for a lifetime. Units of instruction include introduction to physical education, fitness (including fitness terminology), team activities, gymnastics/tumbling, jump rope, volleyball, bowling, badminton, hockey, soccer, and more.  

The program is designed to give students the opportunity to learn fitness concepts and conditioning techniques used for obtaining optimal physical fitness. Students will benefit from cardiorespiratory endurance activities. Students will also learn the basic fundamentals of strength training, aerobic training, and overall fitness training and conditioning.

Emphasis is placed on analyzing skills for effective movement. Students will learn the correct techniques for using manipulatives in throwing, catching, striking, kicking, trapping, and dribbling. Students will learn to analyze their performances to learn or improve a movement skill. Students will learn fitness concepts, participate in a variety of fitness development exercises, assess their personal fitness, and set goals for improvement or maintenance.  Working in small groups, students will learn to accept personal differences (maturity levels, physical differences, and physical abilities).  

Health

This courses addresses health-related issues that are relevant to our high school students. Community physicians give a series of lectures on important topics, including diet, nutrition, eating disorders, establishing safe and healthy habits, mental health, and genetic diseases. All topics are discussed in a Torah framework and in an age-appropriate manner.
